Would you like me to write a recommendation letter on your behalf?
I ask all students to answer a few questions that will help me draft a strong letter. Please provide as much information as you can. If you can’t or prefer not to answer any questions, don’t worry — but the more you write, the easier is for me to write a letter on your behalf. Here’s a list of things that would help me write a strong letter. The more information you give me, the stronger the letter will be. Please send any of these that you have to my email email@example.com using “LoR CSUN student” as the subject.
1 - Attach a CV or resume if you have one. If you don’t, please list all relevant professional experience.
2 - Tell me about your academic/scholarly interests. It can be a draft of your personal statement. The more information you provide to me, the better I can write the letter on your behalf. If you don’t have a personal statement, please answer some or all of these questions: What are some of your academic accomplishments? What are some of your nonacademic accomplishments? What makes you particularly qualified for this position/honor/award/program? What are your long-term goals, and will this position/honor/award help? If so, how?
3 - For each submission, I need details about the program/scholarship/award/etc. Please provide any information you have about the program (what this program is about, what its aims are, what institution, what department). Does this program have a webpage? The clearer this information is compiled for me, the stronger the letter will be. Also let me know to whom I should address the letter (i.e., Dear Dr. So-and-so). Sometimes it is a person, sometimes it is a search committee or something similar. In either case, ideally, I would need their snail mail address. You should find it on the webpage of the department that holds the program/award/etc you’re applying to.
4 - An unofficial (or official) copy of your transcript.
5 - Due date for letter submission.
Please send this info to me by email firstname.lastname@example.org using a text file (e.g. doc, pages, google docs, etc.). Use “LoR CSUN student” as the subject.
Be sure to send me an email reminder about three days before the deadline.
